SINA / Ivan A. Backer Scholarship
The SINA/Ivan A. Backer Scholarship program was established in 1997 in honor of Ivan Backer, who served as president of SINA for nearly 20 years. Backer was one of the driving forces behind the revival of Hartford’s southside neighborhood. Scholarship recipients are selected based on service to the community, school, and family, as well as for academic achievement. Three seniors each receive $4000 scholarships to continue their education at accredited 4-year postsecondary programs. The scholarships are awarded at $1,000 per academic year for four years, as long as the student is in good standing. Scholarship recipients are required to submit a copy of their tuition bill and a copy of their transcripts by November 1 of their sophomore, junior, and senior years. Scholarship applications are distributed to Bulkeley High School each winter. Please see your counselor for an application. Contact Linda at the SINA office with any questions or concerns – (860) 493-1618.
Applications are due Monday, March 13, 2023. Click here to read more about the 2023 application.
